Lawyer’s Fees in Personal Injury Cases
In the ordinary course, lawyers charge and are paid on an hourly rate for the time they spend working on a file. The hourly rates vary and are usually between $150 for a junior lawyer and $350 for a senior lawyer. The hourly rates increase depending on the lawyer’s general experience. Some hourly rates are as high as $750 and even $1000 per hour. Lawyers often increase their hourly rates if they have developed a specialization in a particular fields, such as personal injury.
Will lawyers offer free legal advice? In my experience, many lawyers will answer initial inquiries and questions regarding a legal issue at no charge, but when it is determined that legal opinions are required, a fee will be charged. In the usual course, the amount of time a lawyer spends on a file depends on his/her level of experience, the issues involved and what the particular case requires. The fee will be different from one lawyer to the next for the same case.
In personal injury cases, our law firm offers and most clients prefer to retain us on a contingency fee basis and thus the hourly rate becomes largely irrelevant. When you consider the tremendous cost of litigation and or simply prosecuting a personal injury matter to settlement, most clients are unable to afford paying a lawyer on an hourly basis. A contingency fee arrangement allows any person to afford the services o a lawyer. At the Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer Network, we are pleased to be able to offer our clients the option of contingency fee arrangements. We agree not to charge a fee until we win our client’s case.
